Hurricane Resistant House Plans

Hurricane resistant house plans are drawings that a licensed professional can develop for wind, flood, and debris. They are not houses that have been proven to ignore a hurricane. Guini Design Studio does not sell a hurricane-proof home, and a stock download is not a rating, a test, or a guarantee.

These notes are general education from Guini Design Studio, owned and operated by Guini Productions LLC. They are not a site-specific engineering or architectural opinion, and they are not a permit review.

The phrase is easy to misuse

People search for hurricane resistant plans because they want the structure, the roof, and the windows to be taken seriously. That is a reasonable request. It becomes misleading when a plan seller treats the phrase as a performance certificate. Resistance in a building code is a set of design loads and details. It is not a promise that a named storm will leave the house untouched, and it is not a promise that an insurer or a building official will accept a stock file.

Flood is the other half of the storm and it is a different calculation. A house can be carefully tied together for wind and still be illegal or uninsurable if the finished floor is below the flood elevation. This page will not collapse those into one badge.

What the drawings have to deal with

Wind wants a continuous load path: the roof covering held to the deck, the deck held to the framing, the framing held to the walls, the walls held to the floor, the floor held to the foundation. The idea is ordinary and the detailing is not optional. Openings are where ordinary houses come apart. A window, a sliding door, a garage door, or a gable end that was not designed for the pressure will govern the loss, no matter how heavy the front door looks.

Roof shape matters. A hip, a gable, an overhang, and a tile roof each change the load. Wall material matters, and a concrete-block wall is a different design from a wood-frame wall. None of those choices, by themselves, earn a hurricane label on this website.

HVHZ is not a synonym for hurricane resistant

Every HVHZ project is a wind design. Not every wind design is HVHZ. The zone is Miami-Dade and Broward, with product approvals that are specific to tested assemblies. The rest of Florida still designs for wind, including a wind-borne debris region that is larger than those two counties. The distinction is written out on HVHZ house plans. Using a non-HVHZ stock plan, including any Etsy Studio plan, as if it were already accepted in those counties is a mistake this site will not help you make.

Published plans that state a design wind speed

If a published plan stores a design wind speed in its specifications, it is listed below and the figure is quoted from that record. The list is not a ranking, not a test report, and not an HVHZ file. Plans that do not state a wind speed are omitted rather than decorated with one. Unpublished plans are omitted even if a wind note exists in a draft.

A local Florida-licensed engineer or architect still has to adopt or revise that criterion for your site. The stamp path is the engineering stamp guide. A qualifying CAD upgrade, when the plan offers one, is the signed-and-sealed service.

What to ask before you buy on this basis

Ask where the house will stand, which code edition applies to your submittal date, and whether anyone has already determined the flood elevation. Then ask a local professional whether the stock geometry is worth adapting. If the answer is a redesign, the honest purchase may be a custom set rather than a stock PDF plus hope.

Questions

Are Guini house plans hurricane-proof?

No. No house plan on this site is hurricane-proof, storm-proof, or guaranteed to survive a hurricane. "Resistant" here means the general problem of designing for wind, not a certificate.

Do you list every plan as hurricane resistant?

No. The only plans shown in the list are published plans that state a design wind speed in their own specifications. A plan without that fact is not given a wind number on this page.

Is a stated wind speed an HVHZ approval?

No. A wind speed on a sheet is the criterion used for that drawing. HVHZ approval is a project-specific design and product-approval problem in Miami-Dade and Broward. Etsy Studio plans are non-HVHZ.

Does a concrete block wall make the plan hurricane resistant?

It makes the wall a concrete-block wall, which is one structural choice. It does not rate the roof, the windows, or the connections, and it is not an HVHZ approval.

Will the sealed upgrade guarantee the house against hurricanes?

No. The upgrade is a site-specific professional review of a qualifying CAD set. It is an estimate of schedule, not a performance warranty, and it does not guarantee a permit.

Bring a site, not a slogan

If you tell us the county and whether you are in a flood zone, we can point to a published plan or tell you the catalog does not have the right study. We will not call that a hurricane rating.
